To ensure that all apprentices have sufficient time to master all aspects of their craft the minimum duration of the training is 3 years. In practice the majority of apprentices require up to 4 years.
As all apprentices are employed under the conditions of employment agreed between the employers and unions in the industry they are paid a wage at rates set by these conditions.
These wage rates are reviewed each year and increase as each stage of the apprenticeship is achieved.
All College courses, text books etc are provided free of charge to the apprentice. In addition employers will supply any health and safety personal protective equipment that may be required while working on a site.
At the successful completion of the apprenticeship all apprentices receive a certificate for a Level 3 SVQ from Scottish Qualification Authority, a Modern Apprenticeship certificate from the industry's Training Organisation and are entitled to apply for an electricians Grade Card.
No entry qualifications are required but applicants will find that a reasonable level of proficiency in English, Maths, Technological Studies and a Science subject or Craft and Design will be beneficial as all apprentices must pass an industry approved aptitude assessment, which includes a colour vision assessment, before they are eligible to become an apprentice.
