It is based on the values of the traditional apprenticeship with all apprentices being employed by electrical contractors while they learn the skills of their craft. What's Involved As an apprentice you will be employed throughout your training, both at college and on site. The training is divided into three stages each of which must be satisfactorily completed before progressing to the next stage. Stages Stage 1 Approximately 1 Year 17 weeks at college on block release then applying these skills and gaining practical experience on site. Stage 2 Approximately 1 Year 11 weeks at college on block or day release then applying these skills and gaining further practical experience on site. Stage 3 A Minimum of 1 Year 1 week full time at college covering Inspection and Testing of Electrical Installations at the end of your 3rd year. Throughout all the stages the apprentices will record the work that they have completed for their employer in a Log Book. After satisfactorily completing all the required entries in the Log Book, apprentices undertake a two-day assessment of their knowledge and skills at an industry-approved assessment centre. Due to the hazardous nature of working with electricity, emphasis is placed on Health and Safety at all stages of the training. The Apprenticeship An electrical apprenticeship is normally of 3½ - 4 years duration culminating in the industry's Final Integrated Competence Assessment. On achieving a pass at this assessment the apprentice will be awarded a Level 3 SVQ and a Modern Apprenticeship Certificate and will be eligible for an SJIB Grade Card as an electrician. The apprenticeship which officially starts on the first day of college attendance, involves the apprentice attending college for in the 1st Stage - 19 weeks; in the 2nd Stage - 11 weeks; and in the 3rd Stage - 1 week at college. The rest of the time the apprentice will be working full time for their employer gaining practical experience and completing the required entries in their Log Book. Progression through the stages is dependent on college and site performance. The required Field Evidence Entries must be recorded in the apprentice's Log Book and these entries must be signed off by the apprentice's supervising electrician. Please note that an apprentice will not proceed to the next stage until a grading letter is received from the SJIB. The Apprenticeship Agreement is a legally binding document issued in a standard format by the SJIB and signed by the employer, the apprentice and the apprentice's parent/guardian. At all times the apprentice must be under the appropriate supervision of a competent person. The Conditions of Employment of Apprentices shall be as contained in the SJIB's National Working Rules (copies of which may be obtained from the SJIB) and wages paid in accordance with the hourly rates laid down by the SJIB. It is the employer's responsibility to pay the apprentice's reasonable travel and lodging costs while attending college. Funding is currently available from SECTT to meet a portion of these costs. Apprentice Rates of Pay Effective from Pay Week including Monday 7th January 2008 Shop Rate Travel Rate 1st Stage £3.69 per hour £4.64 per hour 2nd Stage £5.37 per hour £6.53 per hour 3rd Stage £7.77 per hour £9.19 per hour SECTT The progress of each apprentice is strictly monitored by a SECTT Training Officer throughout the apprenticeship to provide guidance and support where necessary and to ensure the continuing high standard of qualified electricians. The employer's support is crucial in this process. Recruitment Procedure A list of applicants who have been assessed under the Industry's assessment procedures (including colour vision) is made available by SECTT to those considering employing an apprentice. It is advisable to act promptly in contacting applicants from the list even if the start date is not immediate as the best candidates may be lost over the summer. The employer can of course nominate his/her own applicant to SECTT who will assess that youngster in accordance with the Industry's procedures. Funding Restricted to Apprentices managed by SECTT for whom full Local Enterprise funding is received. SECTT pay all registration fees. SECTT pay all the fees and provides the relevant textbooks required for College. SECTT monitor and assess the progress of all apprentices throughout their apprenticeship free of charge. SECTT pay for the first attempt at the FICA. SECTT pay grants to the employer based on the achievements of the apprentice at each stage of the apprenticeship. On the successful completion of the 1st Stage of the apprenticeship £750. On the successful completion of the 2nd Stage of the apprenticeship £750. A Completion Grant of £1000 to the employer and £150 to the apprentice on the successful completion of the apprenticeship within a period of 4½ years from start date of the apprenticeship. SECTT reimburse the employer for reasonable necessary travel and lodging costs in excess of £9 per week incurred by the apprentice when they are attending college. To ensure that all apprentices have sufficient time to master all aspects of their craft the minimum duration of the training is 3 years. As all apprentices are employed under the conditions of employment agreed between the employers and unions in the industry they are paid a wage at rates set by these conditions. These wage rates are reviewed each year and increase as each stage of the apprenticeship is achieved. What does it cost? All College courses, text books etc are provided free of charge to the apprentice. In addition employers will supply any health and safety personal protective equipment that may be required while working on a site. Qualifications? At the successful completion of the apprenticeship all apprentices receive a certificate for a Level 3 SVQ from Scottish Qualification Authority, a Modern Apprenticeship certificate from the industry's Training Organisation and are entitled to apply for an electricians Grade Card. How do I start?
