Eight young electricians will compete for the title of Best Apprentice in Scotland at the country’s biggest careers event later this month.
The Electrotechnical Modern Apprenticeship competition (eMAc) is organised by the SECTT, the electrotechnical industry training body and is open to all Apprentice Electricians in Scotland.
The final stage – a two and a half day practical exercise – took place at Scotland’s Careers & Jobs Fair 2008, as part of the SECTT’s exhibition of career and training opportunities for electricians.
The eight finalists, who hail from as far afield as Inverness and Galashiels, will be given a complex task which, over the Saturday, Sunday and Monday, they will complete in full view of the thousands of visitors to the Fair. Their efforts will then be judged by a team of industry experts and the winner announced on Monday afternoon.

Roy Dow of SECTT explains: “Scotland’s Careers & Jobs Fair is an opportunity for SECTT to highlight careers and training opportunities in the electrotechnical industry, and encourage prospective candidates for apprenticeships and adult training to take the next step to becoming an electrician.
“As part of our stand, we will have a demonstration area, where the nine finalists will undertake the competition project. Besides being an excellent opportunity for some of our finest apprentices to demonstrate their skills and abilities, it also gives visitors to the Fair a valuable insight into the quality of work and skills apprentices learn over their three to four year training period.”
Scotland’s Careers & Jobs Fair 2008 is the biggest careers event in Scotland, with employers, training organisations, universities, colleges and careers advisers all under one roof to offer information, inspiration and help with careers, jobs and courses in a wide range of industries and sectors.
